What is MHT CET?

MHT CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) is the state-level entrance exam conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Government of Maharashtra. It is the primary gateway to engineering (B.E./B.Tech) and pharmacy (B.Pharm) admissions across Maharashtra's government, aided, and private colleges.

The exam tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). Over 3 lakh students appear annually. Scores are used for the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) managed by DTE Maharashtra.

Eligibility: HSC with Physics and Mathematics compulsory. Minimum 45% aggregate (40% for reserved category).

CAP Counselling Process

CAP (Centralized Admission Process) is DTE Maharashtra's transparent, merit-based seat allotment system. After results, students register on the official portal, verify documents, and fill option entries.

After each round allotment, choose one of three responses:

Freeze
Accept the allotted seat permanently. Exit all further CAP rounds. Admission confirmed.
Float
Retain current seat but remain eligible for a better option in the next round.
Slide
Try for a better branch within the same college. Retain current branch if nothing better.

After all 4 CAP rounds, Institute Level (IL) rounds fill remaining vacant seats.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about MHT CET admissions, CAP counselling, cutoffs, and college selection.

A percentile of 99+ is excellent for premier institutes like COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, and ICT Mumbai. A 95–99 percentile secures top private colleges like VIT Pune, PICT, and SIT Pune. A 85–95 percentile covers reputed private institutes across Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur. Below 85, hundreds of quality colleges remain available across the state.
Typically 4 CAP rounds are conducted. After all CAP rounds, an Institute Level (IL) round is conducted by individual colleges for seats that remain vacant. Students who did not receive a seat in CAP rounds can participate directly through the college during IL rounds.
Yes. JEE Main scores are accepted for Maharashtra engineering admissions. NTA scores are merged with MHT CET scores using an equivalence methodology set by the State CET Cell. JEE Main candidates participate in the same CAP rounds and compete on the state merit list, which is particularly beneficial for students who could not appear in MHT CET.
The Home University (HU) quota reserves 60% of seats in a college for students who passed HSC from colleges affiliated to the same university. For example, SPPU-affiliated students get preference for 60% of seats in Pune colleges. The remaining 40% is the Other Than Home University (OHU) quota, open to students from any university in Maharashtra and outside-state candidates.
MHT CET cutoffs are the closing ranks at which the last seat in a college-branch-category was allotted in a CAP round. Key factors: total seats available, number of applicants, which CAP round it is (later rounds close higher), category type (Open vs. reserved), and HU vs. OHU quota. Always analyze multiple years of data to understand trends.
Freeze: Accept the allotted seat and exit all further CAP rounds. Admission confirmed.

Float: Keep the current seat but remain eligible for a better option in the next round. If nothing better is available, your current seat is retained.

Slide: Try for a better branch within the same college in the next round. If nothing is available, your current branch is retained.

If you do not report or respond within the deadline, your allotment is cancelled.
TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme) provides a full tuition fee waiver for students from families with annual income below ₹8 lakh. It covers an additional 5% of seats (not deducted from main quota). TFWS has a separate merit list and is available across all caste categories. Requires an income certificate from the competent authority.
Eligibility for MHT CET 2026: (1) Passed or appearing in HSC (12th) or equivalent. (2) Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. (3) Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational as the third subject. (4) Minimum 45% aggregate marks in the above subjects (40% for Maharashtra reserved category). (5) No upper age limit for engineering.
Top government engineering colleges include: COEP Technological University Pune, VJTI Mumbai, ICT Mumbai, Government College of Engineering Nagpur (GCEN), Government College of Engineering Karad, Government College of Engineering Aurangabad, and Government College of Engineering Amravati.
Government colleges: approximately ₹8,000–₹20,000 per year in tuition. Government-aided private colleges: ₹30,000–₹80,000 per year. Unaided private colleges: ₹80,000–₹2,50,000 per year or more. Additional development fees, library fees, and hostel charges apply. The Shikshan Shulkha Samiti (Fee Regulatory Committee) regulates fees for unaided private colleges.
Yes, students from outside Maharashtra can appear in MHT CET and apply for Maharashtra engineering colleges. They are treated as OHU (Other Than Home University) candidates and compete for the 40% OHU seats. Reserved category benefits (OBC, SC, ST, etc.) are not available unless the student holds a valid Maharashtra state domicile certificate.
MHT CET 2026 for engineering has two papers: Paper 1 (Mathematics, 100 questions, 200 marks) and Paper 2 (Physics + Chemistry, 100 questions, 200 marks). The exam is computer-based (CBT). All questions are MCQ type with 2 marks for correct answers and no negative marking. Syllabus is based on Maharashtra HSC Class 11 and 12 curriculum with higher weightage for Class 12.
The Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) certificate is required for OBC, SEBC, VJ, NT, and SBC category students to avail reservation benefits. The creamy layer cut-off is family annual income above ₹8 lakh. Students whose parents earn above this are considered "creamy layer" and must compete in the Open category. The NCL certificate is issued by the Tehsildar and is valid for one year.
Percentile indicates what percentage of students scored below you. A percentile of 95 means you scored better than 95% of all test-takers. Rank is your numerical position on the merit list derived from the percentile. The exact rank depends on total candidates who appeared. For example, with 4 lakh students and a 99 percentile, your approximate rank would be around 4,000.
DTE (Directorate of Technical Education) Maharashtra is the regulatory body overseeing technical education in the state. It approves new colleges and courses, regulates fees through the Shikshan Shulkha Samiti, and coordinates with the State CET Cell for the CAP process. The State Common Entrance Test Cell conducts MHT CET and manages the centralized admissions portal.

About MHT CET

MHT CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) is one of India's most significant state-level engineering entrance examinations. Conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Government of Maharashtra, it is the primary route for over 3 lakh aspirants to secure admission in engineering colleges across Maharashtra every year.

Maharashtra's engineering admission ecosystem is one of the most structured and transparent in the country. The Centralized Admission Process (CAP), managed by DTE Maharashtra, ensures merit-based seat allotment following strict guidelines on reservation and quota distribution.

Key fact: Maharashtra has over 360 engineering colleges across 8+ universities, offering more than 1.5 lakh engineering seats per year. This makes it one of the largest state-level engineering admission ecosystems in India.

Understanding CAP Counselling

The option entry phase is crucial. Students must carefully select and prioritize their college and branch choices. The allotment algorithm assigns seats based on merit rank, option priority, category, and seat availability.

Important CAP Tips

Fill as many options as possible. There is no disadvantage in filling 100+ options. Always start with your most preferred combination and work downward. Use the Float option strategically to try for a better seat without risking your current allotment.

How to Read MHT CET Cutoffs

Cutoffs vary by college type, branch, category, domicile (HU vs. OHU), gender, and CAP round. Generally, cutoffs get tighter in later rounds as popular combinations fill early.

An important concept is the "safe zone". If your rank is better than the 3-year average closing rank of a college-branch-category by a comfortable margin, you have a high admission chance. Use the EduVale predictor to identify safe, reach, and aspiration choices.

Pro tip: Always analyze multiple years of cutoff data to understand trends. A single year's cutoff may be anomalous due to exam difficulty fluctuations or seat changes.

Choosing the Right Branch

Branch selection shapes the next 4 years and beyond. The principle: choose a branch you have genuine interest in, not just one that is trending. That said, understanding market demand is equally important for career outcomes.

High-Demand Branches in 2026

Computer Engineering, IT, AI/ML, and Data Science continue to dominate placement outcomes. Electronics and Telecom is seeing renewed demand with India's semiconductor push. Mechanical and Civil offer strong GATE and PSU pathways.

CS/IT: Highest packages E&TC: Semiconductor boom Mech/Civil: GATE route
